Progress ends when you believe you’ve made it. -Tom Ryan
What does it mean to chase your ceiling? For me, I think it stands for knowing the highest height you can reach before hitting your head. Once you hit your head – you get knocked firmly back to the ground. And that is totally okay.
Reality sets in. You are great, but you will always meet up with others who are greater.
In other words, we should always be looking to stretch our comfort zone. When we are complacent we become ineffective and we lack the ability to improve.
Potential is only as good as the work behind it. We can have great potential but be lazy and lethargic. As a result, we become complacent and unable to grow.
You should navigate life like you know very little. There is so much room to improve if you operate like you have more to learn.
The best in any field need opportunties that challenge them to be better.
Recently, I watched an interview of a really great athlete. He started the interview by thanking his opponent for bringing his best to the contest. It allowed this athlete to be challenged and bring his best as well. Without his opponent he had no gauge of where the ceiling was.
How often do we shy away from the tough moments that life presents us? Learning to embrace hard moments is where we grow and become a better version of ourselves. Thanking those that stretch us is important in life.
Knowing where our ceiling is important and can be temporary as well. The ceiling can move higher only when we first figure out where it is. Look to be uncomfortable. It will be okay.
As we gain experience and perspective – we also gain the ability to stretch and grow. Then and only then can we move our ceiling a little bit higher.
What do you do to stretch yourself and challenge yourself to be better?
Do you know where your ceiling is? Have you forced yourself to be uncomfortable in order to grow?
