Mixtapes + Playlists = LOVE

There is something special in putting together your own soundtrack.

I can remember as a teenager and later into my college years the special joy I found in being able to put together a series of songs on a cassette (yes – I said cassette) and taking that “soundtrack” with me wherever I went.

I would spend hours with dual boombox getting the songs just right. Sometimes the music was just for me and other times it went to special person in my life. It was an expression of love and time spent to create it.

Some of those mixtapes I used so much I began to know the order of the songs and eventually the tape would wear out. I played those tapes so often they became my own personal soundtrack to life. When I heard the song on the radio my brain would tell me what song was supposed to come next!

Today is so different. You can put together a playlist on any streaming service and use that in place of the mixtape that I once so favored. Of course, there is less time involved in the process and perhaps that makes it easier and perhaps a little different.

I think there is still love behind it all. The careful picking of the right songs pieced together to evoke a mode or moment of time in ones life is valuable. Plus the playlist doesn’t wear out.

It’s funny how old we reveal ourselves to be when we think about both processes.

In the end, there is love for both because they both allow me to have something to creatively pick to describe the mood I am in. Music fills my head and helps me accomplish my goals.

The soundtrack of life is rich with choices. Making good ones is critical.

Now find me a boombox so I can play my old mixtapes!

What songs would you put on your mixtape/playlist?

How is love involved in your choices?
